In 1873, after the Civil War, Beloved starts with Paul D coming to stay with Sethe and Denver at 124. Before slavery was over is where most of the flash backs take place. In 1848, Baby Suggs left the Sweet Home plantation in Kentucky and went to Cincinnati, Ohio after her son Halle. To replace Baby Suggs, Sethe arrived at Sweet Home. She spent the next few years at Sweet Home after she married Halle and had three children, to boys and a girl. Mr. Garner was the owner of Sweet Home plantation and died soon before his wife became ill. His wife had asked the school teacher to run Sweet Home, who abused the slaves and treated them like animals. All of the slaves had planned on running away and Sethe sent her children to Ohio to be with Baby Suggs. Sethe was waiting to run away with Halle. In the few short days of waiting for Halle, the school teacher and his nephews took Sethe to the barn and beat her while they sexually abused her. Sethe, six months pregant with her fourth child, ran away the next day.

Morrison then attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where she continued her studies. Morrison taught English at Texas Southern University and in the English department at Howard in 1955-57. Morrison wrote her fist novel, The Bluest Eye while teaching at Howard University and caring for her two children. Beloved was written in 1987, inspired by a true story of a African American slave woman. Why Is This Book College Bound?
In my opion, this book is great for the college bound because it gives great details where you have to pick out the information for yourself to get the answer you are looking for. It makes you think about what it happening in the book and let's you decide what you want to believe. Beloved is a book that has an ending but is still open for you to think of other possibilities. Toni Morrison does a great job of giving you just enough information about Beloved where you can connect her with the ghost haunting 124, but not enough information to prove it. Therefore, you get to decide if Beloved really was the troubled ghost of 124 or just a random nine-teen year old girl. It is also for the college bound because it has some difficult words and has a lot of long sentences you need to break down to understand.
Would I Reccomend It?
Yes, I would reccomend the bood Beloved because it is a very good book. It is confusing at times, but it makes you think. It has a lot of detail in it and it gives a lot of background of how life was for an African- American slave in the 1800's. It talks about the struggles and hardships of those living in 124. This book is great for anyone looking for a challege!
